Research Progress of the Chinese Medicine Licorice in the Prevention and Treatment of Sepsis
Sepsis is a serious infectious disease that can lead to organ dysfunction or failure,with a complex pathogenesis and rapid progres-sion of the disease,resulting in high morbidity and mortality rates.In recent years,traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)has achieved consid-erable success in the treatment of sepsis with its"multi-component,multi-pathway,multi-target"action characteristics,as well as its advan-tages of low toxicity and high safety.Licorice is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine as a"heat-clearing and detoxifying"herb,and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory,anti-viral and immunomodulatory effects.It has been shown that the active ingredients in the Chinese medicine licorice as well as the compound can effectively inhibit the release of inflammatory mediators,attenuate the over-activation of the im-mune system,and reduce the inflammatory response of the body,thus effectively improving the symptoms of sepsis.Therefore,in this paper,we review the research of active components of licorice with remarkable efficacy and compound formulae used for the prevention of sepsis in re-cent years,in order to provide theoretical basis for the clinical treatment of sepsis and in-depth study of the pharmacological effects of licorice.
