A Probe into Lin Shu's Translation from the Perspective of Traditional Essays:Taking Ivanhoe as an Example
Lin Shu was a renowned translator with great controversy in the modern translation circle of our country.On the one hand,although not being proficient in western languages,he translated more than 180 famous western literary works into classical Chinese and made remarkable achievements.On the other hand,he was widely criticized for his massive deletion and adaptation of the original work.This article does not evaluate Lin Shu's translation merits and demerits.Based only on the perspective of traditional Chinese essays,this paper takes Lin Shu's translation of Ivanhoe as an example,and discusses the influence of traditional essay writing skills on Lin Shu's translation from the aspects of theme,structure and layout,and unique classical Chinese language,so as to provide experience and theo-retical guidance for future translators.
