Study on the effect of the water and sediment regulation in the Yellow River
Application of key projects in water and sediment control on the Yellow River is summarized, including the regulatory effect of current reservoirs on water and sediment processes, and the response of reservoirs and channels erosion-siltation are analyzed. Results show that the joint utilization of Long-Liu reservoirs from 1986 has changed the annual distribution of runoff in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, resulting in the aggravation of siltation in Ning-meng River reach. The operation mode of Sanmenxia reservoir was changed from 2002, resulting in the erosion of Xiaobei mainstream, and the elevation of Tongguan station has been maintained near 328 m. Since the operation of Xiaolangdi Reservoir in 1999, the cumulative scour amount at the lower Yellow River reached 2.834 billion tons by 2016, the minimum bankfull discharge of the river channel increased to 4 200 m3/s from 1 800 m3/s before the flood season in 2002. However, the current status of water and sediment regulation still cannot effectively solve the deposition and shrinkage of the channel in the Ning-Meng reach, and has limitations in controlling the elevation of Tongguan and the governance of Xiaobei mainstream. There are still problem of sustainable power during the process of water and sediment adjustment. The water and sediment control system needs to be further improved.
