Microbiological effects on the erosional behavior of intertidal sediments
According to the conventional theory of coastal dynamics, the erodibility of coastal sediment is merely related to physical and chemical properties. The biofilms on the tidal flat formed by quantities of microorganisms and their secreted viscous substances, which exhibit biological stability effects on the attachment of sediment particles, has become a cutting-edge research topic worldwide. At present, research on the biostabilization of sediments in tidal flats is still in the development stage. In this paper, the distribution of intertidal biofilms and their basic properties are reviewed. How biofilms mediate the physicochemical properties, and the stability of coastal sediments is further analyzed.Relevant research can enrich the research scope of sedimentology and coastal dynamics, which contributes to the development of a novel branch to study the estuarine and coastal bio-sediment interaction.
