In 1903,the 29th year of Qing Dynasty's Emperor Guangxu,ZHANG Jian and LING Wenyuan took the opportunity of the exposition held in Osaka to travel to Japan and make an investigation.With their effort to explore the reasons for Japan's rapid industrial,educational and social development after the Meiji restoration,they strived to look for ways to save China through prosperity by connecting the situation on the ground.Due to their differences in traveling nature,ages,personal experiences and social status,their investigations varied from each other in the emphases and conclusions,which is displayed as follows.LING Wenyuan spoke highly of Japan while ZHANG Jian looked at both its good and bad sides on the basis of facts.The former made his remarks about the Qing government tactfully and implicitly while the latter expressed his ideas sharply and frankly.As for what they should learn from Japan,the former was more concerned with craftsmanship and technology while the latter considered systems and institutions from the political perspective.Although both of them hoped that the Qing government could adopt the policy of supporting industry and commerce,ZHANG Jian laid more stress on intellectuals'responsibilities,displaying his courage to shoulder responsibilities and his spirit of working in earnest.
