The narrative of Shi-pin,a work of poetry criticism,is mainly reflected through its content,writing style and characterization.First,there are extracts and quotations from literary sketches,making narrative rather noticeable.Second,the book is written in a"overlooking"style where sequential narrative is often applied,and the events are usually summarized or omitted,where narration is interspersed with supplements or flashbacks.Moreover,comments by the author or others are given in the end.Third,characters are portrayed through their conversations as well as their reappearance on various occasions,which is a way created by SIMA Qian in his book Records of the Grand Historian to depict one certain image through several biographies.The narrative of Shi-pin,not only closely related to the popularity of literary sketches in the Six dynasties but also influenced by historical biography,is not its author ZHONG Rong's intention but objectively displays the narrative tradition of Chinese ancient poetics instead.
