ZHANG Jian and DUAN Qirui were in contact with each other for up to fifteen years.Their interpersonal interaction,which was closely related to the changes in the political situation in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China,could be roughly divided into three stages.The first stage was from the Revolution of 1911 to the National Protection War when they started their interaction and maintained a stable relationship.From 1916,when the National Protection War was over,to the Zhi-Wan War,was the second stage in which they began to have feelings of animosity despite frequent interactions.After that,until the outbreak of the March 18th Massacre,their contact gradually diminished and was ultimately cut off.Their interpersonal interaction not only reflects the changing political situations in the late Qing dynasty and early Republic of China but is also a mirror of their pursuit of different ideals at that time.
