Analysis of the decadal trends in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among rural adults in Ningxia
Objective To evaluate the prevalence, trend, and distribution of metabolic syndrome(MetS)in the rural adults popu-lation in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region during 2008-2012 and 2018-2019.Methods The data were derived from two cohort studies conducted in Ningxia,Northwest China. The first study was conducted from 2008 to 2012,involving 2,703 participants, while the second study was conducted from 2018 to 2019,involving 15,802 participants. The prevalence of MetS in each period was calculated according to the Chinese diagnostic criteria and adjusted for age. Results The age-standardized prevalence of MetS increased from 18.17%in 2008-2012 to 23.77%in 2018-2019(P<0.05).The most common MetS combination type in both periods was waist circumference+blood pressure+triglycerides(age-standardized:3.03%in 2008-2012 vs.6.65%in 2018-2019).In males, this combination was also the most common in both periods(2.55%in 2008-2012 vs.6.16%in 2018-2019).In women, the most common combination in 2008-2012 was waist circumference+blood pressure+triglycerides+fasting plasma glucose(3.60%),while the most common combination in 2018-2019 was waist circumference+blood pressure+triglycerides(7.00%).Conclusion The prevalence of MetS among rural adults population in Ningxia increased from 2008-2012 to 2018-2019 waist circumference+blood pressure+triglycerides remaining the predominantcombination type.
