Effect of organic acids on saline soil improvement and growth of cotton at seedling stage
To investigate the effect of exogenous organic acids on salinity dynamics and cotton nutrient uptake in arid zones,a pot experiment was carried out. Here 10 treatments were set up.The control was with no application of organic acids, and three dosages gradients of 0.01%,0.05%,and 0.10%were set up for acetic acid, oxalic acid, and citric acid, respectively. Results showed that low amounts of exogenous organic acids increase the seedling emergence rate and dry matter content of cotton seeds. The seedling emergence rate and dry matter content of cotton treated with different amounts of acetic acid, oxalic acid and citric acid showed 0.01%>0.05%>0.10%.Cotton emergence rate was increased by 32.47%,52.33%,and 58.95%in 0.01%AC,0.01%OA,and 0.01%NM treatments, respectively,as compared with the control.High amounts of organic acids significantly reduced soil pH,with a decreasing trend as the amount of organic acid applied increased.Low amounts of organic acids significantly reduced the total salt,Cl-,SO42-,Na+,Mg2+,and K+content of the soil.Acetic acid, oxalic acid, and citric acid showed a trend of 0.01%<0.05%<0.10%under different dosage treatments.Compared with the control, the 0.01%AC,0.01%OA and 0.01%NM treatments reduced the total salt content by 40.18%-48.53%;Cl-content by 50.00%-57.64%;SO42-content by 25.76%-38.88%;and Na+content by 47.18%-61.97%.The addition of low levels of organic acids can promote the uptake of N,P,K and Ca in cotton stems and leaves and reduce the accumulation of Na in cotton stems and leaves. The N content of the 0.01%AC,0.01%OA and 0.01%NM treatments increased by 38.96%-59.49%;P content by 57.89%-105.26%;K content by 28.53%-55.58%;and Ca content by 60.98%-76.52%,respectively,as compared with the the control. This study showed that the application of organic acids can effectively reduce the pH and salt content of saline soils and promote the uptake of mineral nutrients N,P,K and Ca in cotton. In a combined comparison,0.01%organic acid dosage was the most effective of the three in respect of saline soil improvement and growth of cotton at seedling stage.
