Has the COVID-19 Pandemic Shrunk the Employment Radius of Migrant Workers?
As a sudden public health crisis, the new COVID-19 pandemic has threatened the lives of Chinese people due to its strong contagiousness and high early severe disease rate.In order to block its spread, measures such as restricting the movement of people have been implemented in many places. It has a great impact on employment, especially the employment of migrant work-ers.Based on the two-phase balanced panel data of the China Family Panel Survey(CFPS)in 2018 and 2020,this paper explores the impact of the pandemic on the employment location of mi-grant workers by combining the time differences before and after the outbreak and the provincial differences in the severity of the pandemic. The results show that the outbreak of the pandemic has significantly changed the employment location of migrant workers, and the increase in the severity of the pandemic has increased the probability of migrant workers returning to rural areas for em-ployment.After controlling for potential endogeneity, the conclusion still holds. The heterogeneity test shows that this effect is more obvious for female migrant workers with poorer health status,low-er income level and education level, working in private enterprises, individual industrial and com-mercial households or foreign-invested enterprises and having children.
