Digital Financial Inclusion and the Income Gap Among Farmers:Exacerbation or Alleviation?
Alleviating the income gap among farmers is an important issue for promoting com-mon prosperity in the new era.Based on the data of"2017 China Household Finance Survey(CHFS)"and"Digital Financial Inclusion Index of Peking University",this paper,by employing the recentralization impact function regression method, investigates the impact of development of digital financial inclusion on the income gap among farmers and its mechanism. It finds that digital financial inclusion has significantly alleviated the income gap among farmers, which still holds after the robustness test. The mechanism analysis indicates that digital financial inclusion reduces the gap among farmers in wage income and transfer income through the"trickle-down effect".Meanwhile,it enlarges the income gap among farmers in operating income and property income, due to the"threshold effect".Moreover, the heterogeneity analysis demonstrates that the utilization depth and digitization degree of digital financial inclusion both work to alleviate the income gap a-mong farmers;digital credit plays the greatest role in reducing the income gap of farmers;digital fi-nancial inclusion can significantly reduce the income gap of farmers in the western region, but has no significant impact on the income gap of farmers in the eastern and central regions.
