The Livestock Reduction Effect of Off-farm Employment:Empirical Evidence from Pastoral Area
Based on the survey data of pastoral households in Gansu,Tibet,Qinghai,Xinjiang, and Inner Mongolia, this paper depicts the trend of off-farm employment in pastoral areas of China from 2007 to 2018,and reveals the livestock reduction effect of off-farm employ-ment.The results show that the off-farm employment level of labor force in pastoral areas has gradually increased, but it is far lower than the average level of agricultural areas in China. The off-farm employment of labor force in pastoral areas is mainly local off-farm employment. At the same time, the participation rate of men in off-farm employment is significantly higher than that of women.Off-farm employment has significantly reduced herdsman farming scale, and mainly re-duced the production of lower-risk species. The results of heterogeneity analysis shows that the impact of migration on herdsmen's breeding scale is higher than that of local off-farm employ-ment,and the impact of women's off-farm employment on herdsmen's breeding scale is more prominent than that of mens off-farm employment. The paper can provide certain decision-making reference for the formulation of relevant policies on employment, ecological protection and animal product supply in China.
