Waterbirds are a group of birds that depend on wetlands for survival.Through the investigation of the waterbird resources,we can understand the ecological status of the wetland, protect the wetland ecosystem, maintain the habitat environment of the aquatic birds, and promote the reproduction and growth of the waterbird population.Understanding the situation of waterbird communities in non coastal areas also plays an important role in understanding the ecological status of inland wetlands.Liaoyang is located in the central part of Liaoning Province,on the East Asia-Australia migratory bird migration route, with two major river systems,Taizi River and Hun River. The study investigated the waterbird populations in winter, spring, and autumn, eight zones and 108 survey sites were set in the area. The results showed that 105 975 water bird entities with 45 species were recorded, belonging to 7 orders and 10 families. Two species of national level I key protected animals and nine species of national level Ⅱ key protected animals were monitored. The survey results can provide important information for the scientific research, environmental management and ecological protection of waterbird resources, and provide an important basis for the protection of waterbird community and habitat in Liaoyang city.
