Tamping and stabilizing the ballast bed after screening is an important measure to ensure the nor-mal operation of the railway line under construction.Three-tamping and two-stabilizing operation modes and four-tamping and three-stabilizing operation modes are commonly used in heavy-haul railway screening work.To theoretically understand the effects of both operation modes,a discrete element model of ballasted track with clean ballast is established.Large-scale track maintenance machinery tamping and stabilizing operations are simulated, and the effects of both operation modes on the mechanical properties of ballasted track, such as compactness, vertical stiffness, and lateral resistance, are analyzed. The results show that the state of bal-last bed has been comprehensively improved through tamping and stable operation.Under the three-tamping,two-stabilizing and four-tamping,the density of ballast bed is increased from 50.25%to 58.61%and 59.65%respectively.The vertical stiffness of ballast bed is increased from 15.70 kN/mm-1 to 50.09 kN/mm-1 and 60.15 kN/mm-1 respectively. The lateral resistance of ballast bed is increased from 2.546 kN to 3.672 kN and 3.465 kN,respectively.
