A Brief Discussion on the Achievements and Shortcomings of Chao Gongwu's Collection of Books
The rulers of the two Song Dynasties valued culture over military affairs and paid more attention to cultural and educational undertakings.At that time,woodblock printing was becoming mature and widely used,allowing a large number of books to be published in the Song Dynasty.The easy availability of books created very favorable conditions for private book collection,which effectively promoted the prosperity of private book collec-tion in the Song Dynasty,and a large number of book collectors emerged at a time.Chao Gongwu who lived in the early Southern Song Dynasty,was the outstanding representative of private collection.Chao not only had a large collection of books,but also sorted and collated the books and compiled them into the famous private col-lection catalogue,Junzhai Bibliography.According to Junzhai Bibliography,the achievements and shortcomings of his collection can be probed in order to have a comprehensive and clear understanding of Chao's contribution to the collection of books.
