The Sage's Concern as Expounded on Xici of Yizhuan
As an important concept in Chinese culture, sages are special beings who can understand and use Tao in Xici Zhuan.Tao is impartial and without personal worries or biases, yet it has the power to give life and sustain all things, which is difficult to be recognized by the common people. The sage, however,is benevolent and knowledgeable, able to observe the heavens, inspect the geography, and understand the obscure and the clear. With a heart and concern, the sage created yi to illuminate Tao,to utilize Tao for the benefit of the peo-ple,and to empathize with the people's worries as his own, actively working to guide them towards auspicious and away from calamity. The text of Xici Zhuan cites important Taoist concepts such as Tao,while also reflecting the Confucian definition of the sage as benevolent and knowledgeable, and holding a high position in politics. The sage's application of Tao,while distinct from Tao itself, enriches the portrayal of the sage in Yizhuan with complexity.
