Patriarchy behind Women Empowerment:On Dual Narrative Progression in Sweet Tooth
Based on the historical discourse of the novel Sweet Tooth and life experiences of the author Ian McEwan,a close reading of the text shows that the novel is featured by its dual narrative progressions. In the overt plot, the female characters exhibit a strong spirit of rebellion, showing the theme of resistance to male hegemony as well as McEwan's optimistic attitude towards the cause of feminism. In the covert progression, women are subject to patriarchal dominance and have no choice but accept the reality passively, thus revealing patriarchal culture's oppression and erosion on women as well as McEwan's questioning and worry about women independence. The dual narrative progressions parallel each other and show readers the complex social situation of women, conveying opposite thematic significance.
