Exploring the Plot Tension in Woolf's Short Stories from the Perspective of Cognitive Aesthetics:A Case Study of A Haunted House
This study delves into the construction mechanism of explicit and implicit plot tension from the lens of cognitive aesthetics.By examining textual features of Woolf's short story A Haunted House,it elucidates the mechanisms behind plot tension construction and thematic connotations, aiming to elucidate readers'cognitive foundations for experiencing plot aesthetics driven by the text. This study demonstrates that:1)A Haunted House utilizes the transition from"dream"to"reality"to craft explicit plot tension, leveraging the SPACE metaphor to heighten tension in the dream world through shortening distances and setting suspense;2)Implicit plot tension enriches the text texture and enhances emotional resonance through textual variations such as tense changes, alterations in word selection within repeated sentence patterns, and the gradual focus on ambiguous imagery;3)Both explicit and implicit tensions underscore philosophical LIFE metaphors. This study presents a novel perspective for analyzing plot tension and serves as an interdisciplinary addition to the examination of Woolf's short stories.
