On Huang Tao's Theory of"Correspondence between Images and Emotions"
Huang Tao proposed the theory of"correspondence between images and emotions"in his works such as Reply to Chen Fanyin's Letter on Poetry, advocating the educative function of poetry in warning the upper and educating lower classes, emphasizing that language is the teacher of the heart, and advocating the unity of"focusing on images"and"expressing human emotions".The proposal of this idea is rooted not only in the good development ecology of Confucianism in Fujian during the late Tang and Five Dynasties periods, but also closely related to its practice of poetry and prose creation. It reflects the inheritance and changes of Confucianism in Fujian during the Tang and Song Dynasties, and also constitutes an important part of the process of Confucianism's southernization.
