The Gravity of Uncertainty:a Study on the Social Mechanism of Teenager Blind Box Culture
Blind box is a newly emerged phenomenon in Chinese youth culture,a consumption behaviour in which customers seek excitement, satisfaction, and achievement through purchasing invisible items. To interpret such youth cultures, sociological theories of risk society under uncertainties and post-modernity can be introduced in the Chinese context. This research applies an interdisciplinary approach of sociology, youth studies, and economics to explain and investigate the socio-cultural institutions behind the blind box and its impacts on Chinese youth culture.Methodologically, this research is based on an in-depth fieldwork in three middle schools in Guangzhou, including almost a hundred young students.Through interviews and focus groups, young people were invited to express their feelings and experiences with the boxes, from their consumption behaviours to how they used the blind boxes as approaches to express, construct identities, and prepare for the risks and uncertainties in the future society.
