A Study on the Translation and Introduction of Overseas Images of Cantonese Pirates in the 19th Century
As an important historical component of modern Chinese maritime culture, the overseas literature of Cantonese pirates in the 19th century has not yet been clarified,so their overseas image is still unclear.According to research, there were 14 English translations and works in the 19th century that introduced pirate activities in Guangdong and foreign countries in the West. These translations and works are presented in various genres such as specialized history, biographical novels, and social and political commentary, depicting the suppression process, criminal behavior, and lifestyle of Cantonese pirates. These works break people's inherent impressions of pirates and comprehensively showcase the criminal nature, multifaceted humanity, and Eastern social characteristics of Guangdong pirates. The above findings are conducive to expanding the academic perspective on the study of Cantonese pirates and helping to broaden the research ideas on the overseas image of traditional Chinese society.
