Research on Theme and Sentiment Evolution of U.S.Diplomatic Think Tank's China-related Discourse:Case Study of Three Belt and Road Forums for International Cooperation
[Purpose/significance]In the context of the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation,this paper explores the theme and sentiment evolution of U.S.diplomatic think tank's China-related discourse,so as to provide intelligence reference for China to respond to the challenge of the world opinion.[Method/process]By extracting China-related texts from website of the Coun-cil on Foreign Relations using python,the study conducts the Latent Dirichlet Allocation(LDA)modelling to extract text topics and clari-fy the focus at different stages.Based on the appraisal framework,the study conducts coarse-grained and fine-grained sentiment analysis by using Vader library and Random Forest algorithm to explore the evolution of emotional tendencies towards China on China-related is-sues.[Result/conclusion]The China-related discourse focuses on political diplomacy,economic and trade finance,global governance and other topics.The discourse mainly presents positive emotions,but implies negative judgment on potential motives of the Belt and Road initiatives.From affirming its economic and trade achievements to fabricating its identity evolution of"speculative behavior,expan-sion ambition,and cooperation trap",the overall change pattern of"arrogance,toughness and prudence"is reflected.
