"From History to Theory":A Comparison of British and American Intelligence Studies Approaches
[Research purpose]Intelligence study is an important part of social science research in the western academic community. Both British and American intelligence studies originated from the experience of historians involved in the practice of intelligence during World War Ⅱ,and further developed based on the intelligence history after the war. However, the British intelligence studies community has made outstanding achievements only in the field of intelligence history, and its theoretical study is far inferior to that of the United States, forming the British School of intelligence studies, and there is an obvious division of study approaches in the two countries.A comparison of their intelligence studies approaches can provide reference for China's intelligence studies.[Research method]Using historical re-search,literature analysis, comparative research, reason analysis and other methods, this paper sorts out the development history of British and American intelligence studies, compares their similarities and differences, and explores the reasons for their division of study approa-ches.[Research conclusion]The study finds that the influence of different political cultures, the differences in social science research tra-ditions,and the different degrees of practical participation in the two countries are the reasons for the division.Intelligence study should be based on historical study, prevent excessive secrecy, and actively promote the integration of theory and practice.
