Influence of Explosion Bolt Diameter on Bolt Load on the Junction Surface of Launch Vehicle
Explosive bolts are one of the weakest load bearing parts of the launch vehicle structure. In sectional static tests explosive bolts are usually replaced by bolts with smaller diameters to facilitate sensor installation. We deduced the expression relating the bolt load to the bolt diameter under the same loading conditions to evaluate the testing method. The expression was verified by finite element results and test results. As indicated by the comparison, the bolt bending moment is proportional to the square of the bolt diameter while the bolt axial force is independent of the bolt diameter.
