The University of Science and Technology of China-Purple Mountain Observatory 2.5m Wide Field Survey Telescope
The University of Science and Technology of China(USTC)-Purple Mountain Observatory(PMO)2.5-meter Wide Field Survey Telescope(Micius Survey Telescope,or WFST)is a"double first-class"discipline platform construction project of USTC.The two parties held a preliminary research kick-off meeting for the telescope project on March 1,2018.The construction of the telescope was officially launched in July 2019.The telescope was installed and commissioned in August 2023.The telescope first-light ceremony and scientific strategy conference were held on September 17,2023,and pictures of the Andromeda Galaxy were successfully released. The telescope and camera have reached the design standards and are ready to carry out astronomical observations. The Micius Survey Telescope has an aperture of 2.5 meter. It adopts an advanced prime-focus optical system design and primary mirror active optical correction technology to achieve the uniform high quality and extremely low distortion imaging capability within a 3-degree field of view.It is equipped with a 765 million pixel mosaic CCD detector. It has the characteristics of large field of view, high image quality, and wide waveband coverage. The Moicius Survey Telescope is located on the summit of Saishiteng Mountain,Lenghu Town,Qinghai Province,China. It is the first large-scale facility in operation at the Lenghu Astronomical Observatory.By acquiring high-precision astrometry and high sensitivity multi-band photometry for celestial objects repeatedly over large sky area, the Micius Survey Telescope can monitor moving celestial objects and light-varying sources, and can be used to efficiently search and monitor astronomical dynamic events. The time-domain survey will provide big data for achieving scientific breakthroughs in the areas of time-domain astronomy, solar system objects, the Milky Way structure and near-field cosmology. At the same time, the Micius Survey Telescope will be oriented towards the national space power strategy, carries out search and monitoring researches on near-earth objects in the solar system, and serves the strategic needs of space security and deep space exploration.
