Development of aluminum industry in the Middle East since 1970s is reviewed herein.The Middle East is a rich place for world oil reserves,and two energy crises have made the oil-producing country here one of the wealthiest in the world,with sufficient funds to develop the aluminum indus-try.In the early days,only Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates(Dubai)vigorously developed the aluminum industry,achieving remarkable results as a result;In the 21 st century,Qatar,Oman and Saudi Arabia have successively entered the aluminum industry,vigorously developing non-oil and gas in-dustries as well as adjusting economic structures.A number of newly-built aluminum smelters with international competitiveness have emerged.All Mid-dle East aluminum smelters are equipped with captive power plants,with natural gas and fuel used for power generation,which also cooperate with down-stream aluminum processing.The plant area has reserved space for expansion.The Middle East countries have limited aluminum consumption with typical export orientation.
