Mobile Phone Addiction and Sleep Quality among Students at a Qiannan Medical College:Relationships and Intervention Strategies
Objective:This study aims to explore the relationship between mobile phone addiction tendencies and sleep quality among medical students at a higher vocational college in Qiannan,China, and to propose targeted solutions to improve the sleep quality of medical students, providing theoretical support for this issue. Methods:A survey using Wenjuanxing was conducted among 224 medical students at Qiannan Medical College for Nationalities. The survey included general information questionnaires, the Mobile Phone Addiction Tendency Scale(MPATS),and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI).Results:Female medical students scored higher on the MPATS compared to their male counterparts, with statistically significant differences, indicating that female medical students exhibit more severe tendencies toward mobile phone addic-tion.Third-year students had the highest MPATS scores, suggesting that they have more severe mobile phone addiction tendencies than students in other grades.Students with sleep disorders scored higher on the total MPATS score and its four dimensions—withdrawal behavior, salience, social comfort, and mood modification—compared to those without sleep disorders, with statistically significant differences(P<0.05).The mobile phone addiction group also scored higher on overall sleep quality, sleep disturbance, and daytime dysfunction compared to the non-addiction group, with statistically significant differences(P<0.05).Conclusion:Mobile phone addiction has significantly impacted the studies and lives of medical students.Schools and teachers should implement effec-tive measures to prevent mobile phone addiction among medical students, thereby improving their sleep quality and promoting their psychological and physical development.
