Through.a brief introduction to Chinese translation history, the paper reveals some of its characteristics： the import surplus tendency in translation, an ideology - dominated translation, an efficacy - motivated translation and a profit - oriented translation. A normative approach to the study of translation history will help to describe the context of situation in which the Source Text was translated. It is also easy to explain if there is a deviation from the dominant norms in the Source Text. This will provide translation criticism with a forceful tool.
