This paper aims to investigate the relationship between vocabulary size and English competence as well as the students＇ English vocabulary size in vocational colleges. It turns out that the average vocabulary size of the subjects does not meet the requirements of the outline of Practical English Test for Colleges--Level B （ PRETCO - B ） . It is also found that vocabulary size is positively correlated with English competence. At the same time some vocabulary learning methods are discussed in this paper.
