This listening teaching experiment conducts English listening teaching practice based on the fimctional linguistics within the framework of those three meta- functions of language. By means of analyzing the meta - functions, i.e. interpersonal, ideational and textual, the three corresponding contexts are constructed so as to get the meaning of what is heard in listening tests and thus listening comprehension ability can be improved. This experiment was conducted in two science and technology major classes with 35 students each. The two classes, one is the experimental class while the other is as a contrast one. The experiment went on for 4 months. The results show (~)analyzing the functions of the listening test items can help students get the information quickly from the test items; (~)analyzing the functions of the test items can help construct the contexts, which on the other hand relieve the toughness of the listening test; (~)analyzing the functions of the test items enhances the students' initiative in the listening comprehension process.
