Shuofang Beisheng and the Value Orientation of Intellectuals in the Late Qing Dynasty
Shuofang Beisheng is a comprehensive work on the history and geography of the northern frontier of the Qing Dynasty that was written by He Qiutao(1824-1862),during the Xianfeng reign. This work occupies an important position in the academic history of the Qing Dynasty. But the large-scale printing of the book was not realized until the Guangxu reign, more than 20 years after the author's death. In addition to the direct promotion of He Qiutao's old friend Huang Pengnian and others, other factors, such as changes in the situation in border areas, the development of printing technology,as well as the popularity of"western learning,"jointly contributed to the formation of the book's academic status. The renewed popularity of this work also reflected the link between academic trends and social conditions in the late Qing Dynasty.
