A Basic Study of the Charges Against Osman in 1786
After the Qing Dynasty unified the regions on the north and south of Tianshan Mountain,it introduced the Beg system in this region, which was more systematic than the customs of the Huijiang region and the court system of the Qing court.Begs had long maintained a strong influence over the society in the Huijiang region,so that the local powers in the area began to struggle for authority among themselves. In 1786,a case of slander against Osman clearly illustrates this. This article, based on the Manchu,Chinese and Chaghatai administrative documents from the First Historical Archive of China in Beijing, unravels the details of this case, thus showing the struggle for authority and interests between the Begs that were hidden behind the case, and the place of the Begs in the Huijiang society and the relations between the Qing authorities.
