A Comparative Study on the Reviews of Four Books,Including Records of the Three Kingdoms
There are numerous differences between the draft, cabinet, and final versions of the Siku Summary. The mainstream view is that these differences primarily arise from the processes of replacement, supplementation, and re-examination involved in the compilation of the"Complete Library of the Four Treasuries."Consequently, the Siku Summary underwent repeated modifications, influenced by factors such as the unauthorized alterations by officials, omissions and oversights by copyists, and Ji Xiaolan's consistent editing. However, beyond these factors,it is likely that the cabinet and final versions of the Siku Summary were revised based on different source texts.Starting from different source texts, the summaries for four works—"Records of the Three Kingdoms,""Xijiang Collection,""Orthodox Literature,"and"Comprehensive Chronicles of Ancient and Modern Times"—form two distinct textual systems. One system is primarily represented by the Wenyuan Pavilion summary and the"General Catalogue of the Complete Library of the Four Treasuries,"while the other is mainly represented by the Wensu Pavilion summary and the Wenjin Pavilion summary. These two textual systems not only differ in wording but also exhibit certain differences in ideological orientation.
