Analysis of Differences in the Functional Traits of 12 Camellia Species
The functional traits of 12 Camellia species planted artificially in Nanning Golden Camellia Park were investi-gated in this study. The variation coefficients, difference, and cluster analysis results were obtained for leaf and twig functional traits. The results showed that the coefficients of variation for nine functional traits of C.limonia C.F.Liang et S.L.Mo were the smallest compared to those of other species and the most stable;they had less variability in functional traits. The coeffi-cient of variation of six functional traits of C.amplexicaulis(Pit.)Cohen-Stuart was the largest compared to the other species. The functional traits of C.amplexicaulis(Pit.)Cohen-Stuart was highly malleable. The degree of functional trait variation of C.murauchii Ninh et Hakoda was close to that of the other ten yellow Camellia species. The clustering analysis of plant func-tional traits revealed that the combination of total leaf area, fresh leaf weight, total leaf dry weight, and fresh stem weight could be used for Camellia plant classification. The cluster analysis showed that the 12 Camellia species could be divided into two prime groups. The C.murauchii Ninh et Hakoda was in one class by itself, and the remaining 11 plants were in another cluster.C.euphlebia Merr.et Sealy and C.amplexicaulis(Pit.)Cohen-Stuart gathered into a cluster.Nine species of yellow Camellia belonged to the same cluster.Among the nine species of yellow Camellia,C.perpetua S.Y.Liang et L.D.Huang and C.limonia C.F.Liang et S.L.Mo belonged to the same cluster.C.micrantha S.Y.Liang et Y.C.Zhong,C.impressiner-vis H.T.Chang et S.Y.Liang and C.ptilosperma S.Y.Liang et Q.D.Chen were most easily assigned to one category.Multi-ple comparisons revealed many differences in functional traits between C.murauchii Ninh et Hakoda and the Chinese endemic species of yellow Camellia and the yellow Camellia species distributed in China and Vietnam. These differences were mainly in phenotypic traits. There were no significant differences among the leaf dry matter content, stem dry matter content, stem tissue density, leaf emergence intensity,or specific leaf area.
