Effects of 60Co-γ Radiation Treatment on the Growth and Development of Phalaenopsis at Different Plant Ages
To investigate the effects of 60Co-γ ray irradiation on the growth of Phalaenopsis at different ages,2.5-inch(1 inch≈ 3.33 cm)medium-grown seedlings and 3.5-inch mature seedlings of the Phalaenopsis cultivar'Zhengnonghongyun'were treated with various doses of 60Co-γ ray irradiation. The results revealed that(1)60Co-γ radiation treatment affected the growth and development of Phalaenopsis plants. The sensitivity to radiation was different at different ages, and the 2.5-inch"Zhengnong Hongyun"seedlings were more sensitive to 60Co-γ rays.(2)All radiation doses could increase the leaf thickness and chlorophyll content of Phalaenopsis.(3)A low dose of 60Co-γ radiation can induce pedicel elongation and flower enlargement, whereas a high dose of 60Co-γ radiation can inhibit Phalaenopsis flowering.(4)A 10 Gy dose of 60Co-γ radiation treatment has more advantages in plant growth and flowering and can be used as the recommended dose for radiation mutagenesis in Phalaenopsis orchids.
