Clinical characteristics of patients in adults and children infected with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron sub variant in Zhuhai city
Objective To explore the clinical characteristics of novel coronavirus Omicron subvariant BA.5.1 evolution branch(BA.5.1 subtype),BA.1 evolution branch(BA.l subtype),and BA.2 evolution branch(BA.2 subtype)in adults and children in Zhuhai. Methods The patients infected with novel coronavirus Omicron subvariant in July 12-20,2022 in Fenghuangshan disease area of our hospital were selected for the study, and the clinical characteristics of infected adults and children were compared, and the change of viral load was further analyzed. The Mann-Whitney U test or Kruskal-Wallis H test was used for quantitative comparison. The x2 test or Fisher's exact test was used for qualitative data analysis.Bonferroni correction was used for comparison between groups. Results A total of 231 patients infected with novel coronavirus Omicron subvariant were included in the study, including 138 adults and 93 children. In adult infected persons, compared with those infected with novel coronavirus Omicron subvariant BA.1 subtype and BA.2 subtype, those infected with BA.5.1 subtype had a lower proportion of respiratory symptoms, all the differences were statistically significant(x2=7.217,14.547;all P<0.05).Asymptomatic BA.5.1 subtype infection was less than that of BA.2 subtype infection, the difference was statistically significant(x2=7.504,P<0.05).Among infected children, those infected with Omicron BA.2 and BA.5.1 subtypes had a higher proportion of fever and lower lymphocyte count than Omicron BA.1 subtypes(x2fever=7.057,9.469,x2low lymphocyte count=8.877,17.046;all P<0.05).People infected with the coronavirus Omicron subvariant had high viral load at the onset of illness, which first increased and then decreased in adults. In children, the viral load of Omicron BA.5.1 subtype and BA.1 subtype showed a gradual downward trend, and the Omicron BA.2 subtype showed an increase first and then a decrease trend. Conclusions In Zhuhai, adults and children infected with different subtypes of novel coronavirus Omicron subvariants had mild symptoms.Compared with BA.l subtype and BA.2 subtype of novel coronavirus Omicron subvariant, the infection of BA.5.1 subtype in adult group and children group did not aggravate the disease severity.
