Analysis of drug resistance phenotype, drug resistance gene and virulence gene of Campylobacter jejuni isolated from fresh poultry in Liaoning province
Objective To investigate the drug resistance phenotype, genetic characteristics of resistance gene and virulence gene harboring in Campylobacter jejuni isolated from fresh poultry in Liaoning province. Methods In this study, the antimicrobial resistance of 9 strains of Campylobacter jejuni isolated from fresh poultry in Liaoning province was detected by agar dilution method and whole genome sequencing method. The whole genome sequences were compared with the Comprehensive Antibiotic Research Database(CARD),Virulence Factor of Pathogenic Bacteria(VFDB)and the PubMLST database to obtain the situation of drug resistance genes, virulence genes and multilocus sequence typing(MLST)in the genome. Results 8 out of 9 strains of Campylobacter jejuni carried tet(O),a tetracycline antibiotic resistance gene, and 6 out of 9 strains were resistant to tetracycline. One Campylobacter jejuni strain was resistant to five antibiotics including nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, streptomycin and tetracycline. The whole genome sequencing analysis showed that 9 strains of Campylobacter jejuni belonged to 6 MLST types, mainly ST45 and ST2274,and the multi-drug resistant strains were ST8089.The carrying rates of cadF,jlpA,peb1A,rpoN,ciaB,cheY,cdtB,cdtC,htrB and waaF were 100%,and the carrying rates of flaA and cdtA were 78%.Two strains of Campylobacter jejuni carried 13 virulence genes. Conclusions In Liaoning province,Campylobacter jejuni was found to be resistant to antibiotics and carried multiple drug-resistant genes and virulence genes, which might cause food-borne diseases to a certain extent. Therefore, surveillance of Campylobacter jejuni infection should be strengthened.
