Analysis of the quality difference between apheresis platelets and buffy coat platelets
Objective To analyze the quality difference between apheresis platelets and buffy coat platelets during storage. Methods Twenty bags of apheresis platelets and twenty bags of buffy coat platelets were randomly selected during the same storage period, and routine quality control evaluation was performed on all specimens. The morphological score, platelet distribution width(PDW),mean platelet volume(MPV),CD62P positive rate, and thromboelastography parameters(including MA value,R time,K time, and α angle)of platelets were measured on the first, third, and fifth days of storage. Results The routine quality control indicators of all specimens met the quality requirements.During the first and third storage period, there were no significant differences in the morphological score,CD62P positive rate, and MPV between the two types of platelets(all P>0.05).Compared with the CD62P positive rate on the first day of storage, the positive rates of apheresis platelets and buffy coat platelets on the third and fifth days of storage were significantly increased(F=91.07,82.57;all P<0.05).Compared with the first day of storage, the cell morphology scores of apheresis platelets and buffy coat platelets on the third and fifth days of storage were significantly decreased(F=107.20,97.05;all P<0.05).Conclusions There was no significant difference in the quality of apheresis platelets and buffy coat platelets and they could be used scientifically and rationally in clinical practice. However, both types of platelets might be suffered from storage damage, and should be transfused within three days in clinical practice.
