Establishing reference intervals of serum pepsinogen for apparently healthy adults in Qinghai Xining region
Objective This study aimed to establish the reference intervals of serum pepsinogen(PG)in Qinghai Xining region and explore the changes of this indicator in different age, gender, and ethnic groups. Methods A retrospective study was conducted on the data of pepsinogen(including PG Ⅰ,PG Ⅱ,and PGR)from 3 366 healthy individuals tested at the Fifth People's Hospital of Qinghai Province from January 2019 to December 2022.The reference intervals of serum pepsinogen at the 95%were calculated for different characteristics groups using the percentile method, and external data were used for validation. Results The serum PG Ⅰ and PG Ⅱ levels in the 50-years old group were higher than those in the 18-<50 years old group, with statistical significance(Z=-3.64,-5.01;all P<0.05).The PGR level in the 50-years old group was lower than that in the 18-<50 years old group, with statistical significance(Z=-3.41,P<0.05).The serum PG Ⅰ and PG Ⅱlevels in males were higher than those in females, with statistical significance(Z=-2.63,-1.41;all P<0.05).The differences in PGR levels between different gender were not statistically significant(Z=-1.49,P>0.05).The serum PG Ⅰand PGR levels in Han nationality were higher than those in minority nationalities, with statistical significance(Z=-2.81,-3.34;all P<0.05).The differences in PG Ⅱ levels between different nationality were not statistically significant(Z=-1.05,P>0.05).The total verification rate of the reference intervals was 93.12%,with good applicability. Conclusion Reference intervals of serum pepsinogen for apparently healthy adults of different ages and genders in Qinghai Xining region were established, providing data support for relevant medical research in the region and reference for clinical doctors to better assess patients'gastric function and disease risk.
