在人类漫长的发展历史中，动物与人有着密切的联系，对人的生产生活造成了巨大的影响，这种千丝万缕的联系，使人类对动物产生了喜爱、厌恶、同情、恐惧等错综复杂的情感，英汉两国人民也不例外。在这两种文化中有许许多多跟动物相关的文化，人们借助动物来更贴切的表达自己的情感。由于受审美价值、宗教、风俗习惯、民族心理等多方面因素差的影响，英汉语化中动物词承载的语言文化内涵也不尽相同。
