Study on the effects of flame retardants on the flame retardance of thermoset phenolic resins
The effects of the single or synergistic mixtures of flame retandants such as aluminum hydroxide(ATH),magnesium hydroxide(MH),expanded graphite(EG) and intumescent flame retardant(IFR) on the flame retardance of phenolic resin(PF) system were investigated by the testings of oxygen index, vertical burning level and the yield of smoke. The micro thermal behavior of the system were studied by the differential thermal analysis(DTA).The results showed that the minimum heat release system was ATH/MH/EG/PF,and the maximum oxygen index was up to 96 for ATH/MH/EG/IFR/PF system. The yield of smoke of ATH/MH/PF system was the lowest 72%.The vertical burning level of the systems could be increased to UL94V-0 grade after adding flame retardants.
