This review summarizes the progress in the research of the scalp microbiota and scalp health, covering an overview of skin microbiota across different regions that include the face, trunk, axilla, hands, and scalp.Variations in moisture and oil content across these regions lead to the differences in microbial distributions. The scalp microbiota has a significant effect on the scalp health;and the imbalance in scalp microbiota can result in the formation of the dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and hair loss.Current methods for the detection and analysis of the scalp microbiota include the traditional microbiological methods, biochemical analysis,16S rRNA gene sequencing, quantitative PCR analysis, and metagenomics.Metagenomic technology serves as a crucial tool in studies on the scalp microbiota, which offers the comprehensive insights into the composition and functionality of microbial communities.Besides, the external factors, such as the usage of various shampoo products, also can influence the scalp microbiota.Solutions to the maintain microbiota balance are summarized, which include the use of prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics to regulate scalp microbiota.Additionally, certain plant-based ingredients can be used to solve the microbial imbalance through their antimicrobial properties.
