Abstract
The New Year customs of ancient Japan were deeply influenced by Chinese culture. This influence was made possi-ble by the spread of the ancient Chinese calendar, which replaced the natural calendar previously used in early Japanese societ-ies.This adoption of the Chinese calendar provided the essential foundation for the transmission of Chinese New Year customs to Japan. The calendar assigned special cultural significance to the New Year, and various New Year traditions in ancient Japan were closely associated with this unique cultural meaning.Following the Meiji Restoration,Japan adopted the Western calen-dar,shifting the New Year's customs to align with the Western New Year's Day.This change contrasts with the experience in the Republic of China, where, despite the government's effort to implement the Western calendar, the traditional lunar New Year remains widely recognized and observed.
