摘要
清代使臣图里琛所著《异域录》不仅是史学典籍,也是文学文本.汉学家斯当东最早将其英译,并在副文本中加入大量点评.作为译者,他以自己的宗教立场和审美偏好过滤原作,并通过种种方式将其改头换面为彼时欧洲游记的样式;作为论者,他以回环曲折的论述方式,将自己的观点包裹在相对立的观点之中,隐蔽地传达其对《异域录》所涉中国内政、外交的看法.他熟谙当时英人的阅读偏好和对华态度,在迎合大众审美的同时也发表自己的独特观点,正是这种读者意识使得他的译本在当时流传极广、影响极大.
Abstract
The book Yiyu Lu written by Tu Lichen of the Qing Dynasty is not only a historical classic,but also a literary text.Sinologist Staunton first translated it into English,adding numerous commentaries in the paratexts.As a translator,he filtered the original work with his own religious stance and aesthetic preferences,and through various means,he transformed it into the genre of European travel writing.As a commentator,he wrapped his own opinions in opposing viewpoints,secretly conveying his views on Qing China's internal affairs and foreign diplomacy in a circuitous way covered by Yiyu Lu.Well versed in the British's reading preferences and their attitudes toward China at that time,Staunton could balance between catering for the general public's interests and delivering his personal opinions.It was this sense of readership that made his translations widely circulated and largely influential at the time.
