Private Art:A Primitive Study on the Shell Paintings Excavated from the Warring States Period Qi Tomb in Linzi
Recently, the Shandong Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology published the images of three shells with paintings dated to the middle or late Warring States period, which were excavated from a tomb to the south of Xujiacun Village,Linzi,Shandong province in 1991.These findings revitalized the objects of a similar nature in overseas collections and relevant textual records. The small-scaled paintings are private,"non-ritual",and"useless"works,but they demon-strate early painting's pure aesthetic value, which transcended the religious, ritual, and didactic purposes. In this sense, they enrich our understanding of Chinese art history's fundamental approach.
