Realistic Expression of the Ideal of Enlightenment:on Wang Xun's Draft of Chinese Art History
Wang Xun's research on Chinese art history directly continues the academic tradition of the New Culture Movement, especially Cai Yuanpei and Deng Yizhe, and also inherits the tradition of German art history since the Enlightenment.Wang Xun emphasized in his research and teaching of Chinese art his-tory,especially in his works such as Draft of Chinese Art History, that"art history is a science",laying stress on the revelation of the"excellent tradition of realism"in Chinese art history based on the Realism of Machism, and using it as"the basis for creating new art",as well as questioning"why one should study or research art history",which are concrete expressions of the Enlightenment spirit.Wang Xun's research and works on Chinese art history may have specific shortcomings or even errors, but his various arduous efforts in studying Chinese art history and writing related works during special periods, especially his repeated questioning of"why one should study or research art history,"still have its lasting significance.
