Textual Criticisms and Explanations of the Lotus Crown on Bodhisattva Statues of the Northern Dynasties
The design of lotus crowns featured in the Bodhisattva statues of the Northern Dynasties can be distinctly classified into two primary categories:firstly, those crowns that are exclusively fashioned in the likeness of a lotus flower;secondly, those that incorporate lotus petals or buds as integral decorative com-ponents.When examined within the context of their temporal and geographical emergence,it coincided with the significant period of the Sinicization of Northern Wei Buddhist sculptures. This paper holds that the lotus crown observed in the Bodhisattva statues of the Northern Dynasties evolved from the assimilation and subsequent transformation of the three-sided disc crowns originating from India and the Western regions, into a distinctly Chinese-styled lotus crown. The author maintains that the prevalence of the lotus crown during the late Northern Wei period is strongly implicated in the societal backdrop, religious convictions, and politi-cal ethos of that era.
