A New Exploration on Meyer Schapiro's Semiotics of Art:Based on the Comparison of Iconology and Semiotics
Meyer Schapiro agreed with the exploration of the deep meaning of works of art by iconology but questioned its epistemological basis, its neglect of the particularity of images and the narrow scope of its application. So he tried to construct a new kind of art semiotics beyond text-centric and logo-centric semiotics on the basis of iconology. On the one hand,he analyzed the non-iconic components of images and their signification, pointing out that the meanings of images are not only dependent on conventions but also rooted in human nature. On the other hand,he discussed concrete ways of transforming texts and scripts into images, highlighting the status and function of subjects of interpretation of signs. This kind of semiotics of images, which focuses on the interpretation of symbols, breaks through limitations of iconology such as over-reliance on texts and ignorance of the viewer's perspective,so it can provide an important reference for the construction of contemporary semiotics of art.
