The variable speed pumped storage unit with full-size converter(FSC-VSPSU)can provide fast and flexible regulation capacity for power grid,assisting the rapid development of new energy dominated power systems,and its application is gradually becoming widespread.In order to grasp the operating characteristics of actual FSC-VSPSU in pumping mode and analyze the actual problems that may occur in engineering site,a simulation model of FSC-VSPSU in pumping mode is established.In addition,FSC-VSPSU usually adopts the direct opening level control in pumping mode,which cannot accurately control the pumping power.Another control method is proposed to use an external power control loop to effectively control the pumping power as the supplementary method for the unit.By simulating the operation of FSC-VSPSU under direct opening level control and external power control loop,the operating characteristics are summarized,which can provide a simulation tool and commissioning guidance for the actual on-site operation of FSC-VSPSU.
