REPRODUCTION AND LIFE TABLE OF CAPATIVE POPULATION OF GIANT PANDA (AILIROPODA MELANOLEUCA)
Giant panda is seasonal breeder and has marked mating season from March to April and birth season from August (30.4%) to September (48.88%),and on average produces a litter of 1.5 pups with a sex ratio (female : male) of 1.1∶1. Female (n=15) giant pandas were mature at the age of 5.7±1.1 years while the males (n=3) at 5.8±0.58 years. The study showed a wide range in gestation period and infant body weight and on average they were 139.8 days and 142.6 g. Life table constructed from the dead specimens on period from 1936 to 1999 of captive population of giant pandas revealed that the net reproductive rate (R0) was 0.209,the generation length (T) 9.187,the innate rate of change -0.170,and the fractional rate of length (λ) 0.844.
